DVFA Conference and Several Calls

Thursday, July 19, 2018

This past week was the annual conference for the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association (DVFA).  Cheswold's members were busy in the weeks leading up to this making sure the apparatus and station were clean.

Two of our members were wrappping up their terms as leaders of statewide groups.  Mary Frances Eisenbrey served the past year as President of the state Ladies Auxiliary Association while Jennifer Knox was President of the state EMS Association.

Wednesday nigh, Cheswold was dispatched for an accident in Nobles Pond.  The command unit arrived to find a car that had hit a light standard and electric box.  At that moment, a second accident was dispatched on Route 1.  Leipsic Fire Company was requested to assist with that.  Delmarva Power was resquested for the Nobles Pond incident.  They arrived and advised us that the electric box had 14,000 volts running through it and needed to be shud down before moving the vehicle.  Half of the Nobles Pond development was without power for about 3 hours while repairs were being made.

Thursday night, Cheswold hosted the annual stae Fire Chiefs Association dinner and meeting.  Over 400 attended the dinner where new officers were installed and awards were given out.  During the meeting our personnel handled an accident on West Denney's Road.  Leipsic assisted on this accident.

Around 4 am on Friday, we were alerted to an accident in front of Royal Farms on North Dupont Highway with 2 subjects trapped in different vehicles and one additional patient.  Members of the Neptune Fire Company of Richland, PA had arrived at our station earlier in the morning to cover Cheswold for the conference.  Several of them assisted our personnel to free the patients and clear up the accident.  2 ambulances from Smyrna American Legion assisted us to transport the injured.

Saturday was the parade.  Cheswold firefighers and auxiliary marched in the parade and had 8 vehicles in line.  We won several trophies.  After the parade, we were dispatched to a serious accident with subjects trapped in two vehicles and a subject ejected.  Our standby crew from Neptune and our own members responded.

Late Saturday night, we were dispatched to another accident near Kenton were someone struck a deer and ended up in a field.  Personnel from Neptune and Cheswold responded to that as well.
